Nespresso Vs Keurig: Who is the winner?

Both Nespresso and Keurig have their specialties and their disadvantages. We have discussed some points that can help you differentiate between these brands.

Cost of Coffee Makers

Nespresso coffee makers are considered high-end machines. Nespresso has a wide range of coffee makers that usually retail from $150-$300. You can get Nespresso Essenza Mini for $149 if you are looking for the cheapest Nespresso Machine. The Nespresso coffee machines are expensive, but the coffee quality is not compromised.

Keurig Coffee Machines are not as expensive as their Nespresso counterparts. They offer affordable coffee makers that retail from $60-$250 and brew quite good coffee. The Keurig K-mini is only $79 and can brew coffee between 6 to 12oz using the k-cup pods.

Winner: Keurig

Nespresso Capsules vs K-cups

Nespresso has divided its model into two lines; the Original line and the Vertuo line. It has different varieties of coffee capsules but not enough flavors. Collectively, there are around 24 Nespresso capsules available. The Nespresso pods have various sizes, So choose the correct one according to your machine. The Original Line machines are capable of using third-party capsules. On the other hand, VertuoLine can’t function without the Vertuo pods because it uses a bar code scanning technique to extract coffee from the capsules.

Keurig has hundreds of pods for its machines, and Nespresso can’t beat that. It has a massive variety of 400 K-cups under 60 brands ranging from hot coffee to cold beverages. Keurig has collaborated with Cinnamon, Starbucks, and Dunkin Donuts to create k-cups, so you will have unlimited options for coffee capsules if you buy Keurig.

Winner: Keurig

Cost per capsule

The Nespresso original line can use third-party capsules, which means you can find cheaper alternatives in the market. For the VertuoLine, you will have to use the Nespresso Vertuo capsule for your machine to extract coffee.

Nespresso OriginalLine pods retail for $0.75 to $0.80

Nespresso VertuoLine pods retail for $0.90 to $1.50

Keurig uses K-cups for all its machines and has discontinued K-Mug, K-Vue, K-Carafe, and K-Rivo pods.

Keurig K-cup retails for $0.35 to $0.65

Winner: Keurig

Variety of Coffee Machines

Nespresso has divided its machines into two coffee systems; the Nespresso OriginalLine and The Nespresso VertuoLine. Nespresso has fewer coffee makers than Keurig, but the quality of Nespresso has no comparison.

Keurig has introduced around 80 models to the coffee industry. With dominating the espresso industry for over a decade, the Keurig coffee makers have been the first choice of coffee drinkers in the US due to their affordability.

Winner: Keurig

Caffeine Content in capsules/k-cups

Each Nespresso Capsule consists of 5-6 grams coffee grounds. The caffeine content depends on the type of coffee capsule you use. The Original Line capsules consist of 55 to 65 mg caffeine content. On the other hand, the Vertuoline capsules have 60 to 150 mg of caffeine content.

The standard Keurig K-cups have 75 to 150 mg of caffeine content. On average, k-cups have 100 mg of caffeine, but the extra bold k-cups consist of 30% more coffee grounds. It is hard to generalize the caffeine content because Keurig has a massive variety of pods.

Winner: Keurig

Brewing Quality

The Nespresso Original Line machines can brew up to 40 to 110 ml of coffee. On the other hand, Vertuoline can make coffee up to 40 to 414 ml. It brews the perfect espresso with a layer of crema. Another advantage of Nespresso coffee makers is that they generally have inbuilt milk steamers. Nespresso comes with a milk frother and a steamer, used according to the preference.

The Keurig machines are affordable but can’t compete with Nespresso Machines in brewing coffee. The maximum brewing capacity of Keurig machines is 10oz, it also has options of making 6oz and 8oz of coffee. The Keurig machines don’t come with a milk frother so you will have to buy it separately. Only the high-end Keurig models like K-Cafe and K-Latte have milk frothers.

Winner: Nespresso

Performance

Nespresso machines are known to produce the best quality brewed coffee. The coffee makers are quite expensive and high-end, but they produce the most flavorful coffee in no time. The Nespresso machines use the centrifugation technique to make the most authentic coffee full of flavor. The Nespresso brew has a thick crema that adds to the quality of the espresso.

Keurig and Nespresso have similar brewing techniques. It uses pressure to brew coffee and it can also make the traditional drip coffee. The machine extracts coffee from the k-cups by piercing holes in the center. It takes a few seconds to produce a cup of coffee. The brewing process is faster than Nespresso, but it can’t beat Nespresso’s taste.

Winner: Nespresso

Maintenance

When it comes to maintenance, both Nespresso and Keurig are very similar. Both need frequent cleaning to maintain the quality of the brew. Nespresso has an advantage because it has an in-built descaling mode. The descaling mode cleans the machine and gets rid of all the coffee residue.

The brewing process is also simple for both machines, insert a pod of your choice, fill the water and press the brew button.

Winner: Nespresso

Reliability

Nespresso machines come with a 2-year warranty from the company. You can get help from the brand through its helpline if there is a problem with any spare part or the machine is not working.

On the other hand, the Keurig coffee makers come with only a warranty of 1 year.

Winner: Nespresso

Recycling of coffee pods

Nespresso coffee capsules come in aluminum covers that keep the flavor of coffee grounds intact. These pods are full of flavor but very hard to recycle. After you discard your pods, you have to dispose of them properly. Nespresso has set up its recycling program to keep the environment safe from negative impacts.

Keurig has intended to make the pods recyclable and became successful in 2020, but not as environmentally friendly as Nespresso capsules.

Winner: Nespresso

Design

The Nespresso machines are sleek and stylish. They do not require a lot of space to operate. However, Keurig machines are comparatively not that sleek and take more space on the counter.

Winner: Nespresso

Flexibility

Some coffee makers are multi-purpose, and some stick to the coffee brewing job. In terms of flexibility, Nespresso Machines are manufactured only to make coffee, while the Keurig provides several other options.

Nespresso makes the best espresso, and there is no doubt about it. Some of the Nespresso machines are capable of making lattes; while most of them are for espresso only.

Keurig on the other hand can make different kinds of beverages like coffee, hot chocolate, iced coffee, and lemonades.

Winner: Keurig

Final Verdict

If we compare both coffee brands, Keurig is more economical. Nespresso is known for its reliability and taste. It is the single-serve coffee machine that can brew the most authentic espresso. Our final verdict is in favor of Nespresso because quality is what matters the most. Good quality coffee can do wonders for you. If you like to start your day with the best taste of coffee, Nespresso is for you. On the other hand, if you are looking just for affordability and you can compromise on the taste of your brew, Keurig is your choice.
